Regional Influence. Global Impact.

The Cascadia Open Education Summit is a unique three-day, internationally attended event where thought leaders come together to share groundbreaking ideas, research, and best practices for using open educational resources (OER). Their delegates include government officials, faculty, academic administrators and leaders, educational developers and technologists, librarians, instructional designers, student support staff, and students.

The 8th annual Summit will be digital and will be a mix of live and pre-recorded sessions delivered through the virtual platform provider, EventMobi. The event follows on the 2019 Cascadia Open Education Summit which took place in Vancouver, B.C. on April 17 & 18, 2019, co-hosted by Lumen Learning, Open Oregon Educational Resources, and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC).

Cascadia Open Education Summit welcomed people engaged in higher ed-focused open education initiatives, including students, faculty, librarians, instructional technologists, administrators, and other campus leaders.

The British Columbia Premiere John Hogan met with Washington State Governor Jay Inslee to announce they will contribute $300,000 for the next phase of a study exploring the potential of ultra-high-speed Cascadia corridor transportation service linking British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.

A Growing Cascadian Identity - British Columbians Identify more with Washingtonians than their Canadian Neighbors

A newly released study shows that British Columbians feel a stronger Cascadian affinity to the south than with their eastern Canadian counterparts. In total - 54 percent of British Columbians felt they had the most in common with Washington state, 18 percent picked California while just 15 per cent chose Alberta, 9% percent chose Ontaria, and less than 3% chose Manitoba, Saskatchewan or another Canadian area.

Canadian Forces Illegally Enter Wet'suwet'en Country in Northern Cascadia

On January 7, 2019, at approximately 2:51pm, RCMP and military forcefully breached a peaceful checkpoint on unceded Wet’suwet’en territory. Indigenous people were ripped from their homes by militarized police. There were at least 12 confirmed arrests, including an elder, and Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs were blocked from their own territories.

Cascadia Subduction Zone Tremors: 36,377 in 2018

In 2018, the Cascadia Subduction Zone saw 36,377 Episodic Thrusts & Slips (ETS). These tremors are different from earthquakes, which are generally more sudden, and that of other, shallower faults, which can be generated from the pressure buildup of magma sitting under Cascadia’s many volcanoes along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
