To whom it may concern,
This election season, we watch with great concern as those most powerful in the United States seek to cast doubt on their own electoral process, which has already been rendered fraught by twin pandemics of coronavirus and western wildfires. We believe it is in our best interest to seek greater self-determination with a country that is still standing rather than one that is in shambles.
To that end, we represent a group of organizations seeking greater autonomy for regions of North America. Over the next few weeks, the importance of maintaining the integrity of the fragile democracy in the US cannot be understated. If we cannot hold a free and fair election with enough patience to let absentee and mail-in ballots be counted alongside in-person early and day-of ballots, then perhaps the country is in worse shape than we thought. We are not interested in picking up the pieces; we’re looking to build something better.
As a result, for our first joint public act, we raise our voices to support free and fair elections in the United States. We recognize that it is an extremely challenging endeavor to hold a very complicated election in the most tenuous time in recent American political history in this country, in all 3,143 counties and county-equivalents, including the District of Columbia. If we, who want to see the fabric and structure of the country fundamentally changed, are willing to support one of the oldest living Constitutions in one of its primary goals, the peaceful transition of power for Senators, Congressmen, and perhaps the President, then maybe there is hope yet that we will make it through 2020. In any event, we recognize that this year’s election will likely not be concluded in a day or perhaps even more than a week, and it should not be considered over until all ballots for all candidates are counted. Any effort to the contrary should be seen as the undemocratic danger that it poses to our collective future.
With that said, you can bet when January 2021 rolls around, we’ll be fighting for the same groundbreaking changes we’re fighting for now to give more people more power over their own lives. But for now, we are directing our energies to this pivotally important cause, and hope you will join us in raising the chorus to make our elections #FreeAndFairFirst.
Sincerely,
