Welcome to Cascadia
Image from the Cascadia-Institute. The Cascadia Bioregion stretches from Southeast Alaska to Northern California and as far east as Yellowstone. Bioregion simply means life place, and is an acknowledgement that whether we are talking about salmon, forest fires, disaster resilience, energy or food - nature acts on the scale of watersheds, ecoregions and bioregions, and - so must we.
The Cascadia Department of Bioregion is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and social movement organization working to support the idea of Cascadia and promote bioregionalism throughout the bioregion—which spans Washington, Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia, and portions of Alaska, California, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, and Yukon. We strive to foster a positive regional identity, protect the environment, increase local autonomy, and reverse the harms of colonial systems by building an interconnected network of bioregional movements across North America and the world.

An independent bioregion that is regenerative, democratic, and just, as part of a world of watershed movements.
At the heart of our work is bioregionalism—a philosophy and practice of living sustainably within the natural boundaries of a place, such as watersheds and ecosystems, rather than political borders. Through education, workshops, publications, events, and cultural tools like the Cascadia flag and Cascadia Passport, we help communities cultivate stronger relationships with their land, culture, and each other. Our efforts focus on ecological harmony, community self-determination, decentralized governance, local resilience, and the celebration of a distinct Cascadian identity. We are proud to collaborate with Indigenous nations, support local organizing, and foster the emergence of chapters, guilds, and community projects throughout the bioregion and beyond.
We are dedicated to placing bioregionalism into mainstream thought as a viable alternative to capitalism and the nation-state. Through our community projects, events, maps, and cultural symbols like the Cascadia flag, we educate and engage people in the practice of living in harmony with the natural boundaries of our region—its watersheds, ecoregions, and communities. Our mission is to deepen our connection to place and support a bioregional future that is democratic, regenerative, and just.

On October 18, 2025, nearly 7 million people across the world stood up with a single message: No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings. From small towns to global capitals, from high schoolers to elders, a movement rooted in love, resistance, and collective memory swept the streets of more than 2,700 cities in one of the largest single-day protests in U.S. history.
